Birth full verses back to top

Remember when the wife of Imran said, ‘My Lord, I dedicate what is in my womb entirely to You, so accept it from me. You alone are the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.’

When she gave birth, she said, ‘My Lord, I have delivered a female.’ Allah knew best what she had delivered. ‘The male is not like the female. I have named her Mary, and I seek Your protection for her and her descendants from Satan, the accursed.’

And when the angels said, ‘O Mary, Allah has chosen you, purified you, and elevated you above all women of the world.

O Mary, be devout to your Lord, bow down, and prostrate with those who worship.’

This is from the unseen knowledge We reveal to you. You were not there when they cast lots to determine who would care for Mary, nor were you present when they disputed.

The angels said, ‘O Mary, Allah gives you good news of a word from Him, his name is the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary. He will be honoured in this world and the Hereafter and will be among those closest to Allah.

He will speak to people in infancy and adulthood and will be among the righteous.’

She asked, ‘My Lord, how can I have a child when no man has touched me?’ Allah replied, ‘Thus it will be, Allah creates whatever He wills. When He decrees something, He simply says, “Be,” and it is.’

Allah will teach him the Book, wisdom, the Torah, and the Gospel.

And he will be a messenger to the Children of Israel, saying, ‘I have come to you with a sign from your Lord. I will shape for you a bird from clay, breathe into it, and it will become a living bird, by Allah’s permission. I will heal the blind and the leper and bring the dead to life, by Allah’s permission. I will tell you what you eat and what you store in your homes. Surely, in this is a sign for you if you truly believe.

And mention in the Book Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a secluded place in the east.

She screened herself away from them, and We sent to her Our Spirit, who appeared to her as a perfect man.

She said, “I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, if you are righteous.”

He said, “I am only a messenger from your Lord, sent to grant you a pure son.”

She said, “How can I have a son when no man has touched me, and I have never been unchaste?”

He said, “Thus it will be. Your Lord says, ‘It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign for humanity and a mercy from Us. It is a matter already decreed.’”

And remember the one who guarded her soul, we breathed into her of Our spirit, and made her and her son a sign, a wonder for all the worlds.

And Mary, daughter of Imran, who guarded her chastity. We breathed into her from Our spirit, and she affirmed the truth of her Lord’s words and His scriptures. She was among the devout.

So, she conceived him and withdrew with him to a remote place.

The pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, “I wish I had died before this and been completely forgotten.”

Then he called to her from beneath her, “Do not grieve; your Lord has placed a stream beneath you.”

“And shake the trunk of the palm tree toward you; it will drop fresh dates for you.”

“So eat, drink, and be comforted. And if you see anyone, say, ‘I have vowed a fast to the Most Merciful, so I will not speak to any human today.’”

Then she came to her people carrying him. They said, “O Mary, you have done something terrible.”

“O sister of Aaron, your father was not an evil man, nor was your mother unchaste.”

So she pointed to him. They said, “How can we speak to an infant in the cradle?”

He said, “I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.”

“And He has blessed me wherever I go and enjoined upon me prayer and charity as long as I live.”

“And He has made me kind to my mother and has not made me arrogant or defiant.”

“Peace be upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I am raised alive.”

That is Jesus, son of Mary, a statement of truth about which they dispute.

And for their denial and slander against Mary

And We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign, and sheltered them on a peaceful hilltop with flowing water
