The Burning Bush

Has the story of Moses reached you?

20:9Hath there come unto thee the story of Moses?

26:10And when thy Lord called Moses, saying: Go unto the wrongdoing folk,

79:15Hath there come unto thee the history of Moses?

When his Lord called to him in the sacred valley of Ṭuwa

79:16How his Lord called him in the holy vale of Tuwa,

When he saw a fire, he said to his family, “Stay here, for I have noticed a fire. Perhaps I can bring you a torch or find guidance there.”

20:10When he saw a fire and said unto his folk: Lo! Wait! I see a fire afar off. Peradventure I may bring you a brand therefrom or may find guidance at the fire.

When Moses said to his family, “I have seen a fire, I will bring you news from it, or a burning ember so you may warm yourselves.”

27:7(Remember) when Moses said unto his household: Lo! I spy afar off a fire; I will bring you tidings thence, or bring to you a borrowed flame that ye may warm yourselves.

28:29Then, when Moses had fulfilled the term, and was travelling with his housefolk, he saw in the distance a fire and said unto his housefolk: Bide ye (here). Lo! I see in the distance a fire; peradventure I shall bring you tidings thence, or a brand from the fire that ye may warm yourselves.

We called him from the right side of the mountain and brought him near for a private conversation.

19:52We called him from the right slope of the Mount, and brought him nigh in communion.

But when he reached it, he was called from the right side of the valley, from the blessed ground: “O Moses, it is I, Allah, Lord of the Worlds.”

28:30And when he reached it, he was called from the right side of the valley in the blessed field, from the tree: O Moses! Lo! I, even I, am Allah, the Lord of the Worlds;

But when he reached it, he was called: “Blessed is the One within the fire and the One around it. Glory be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.

27:8But when he reached it, he was called, saying: Blessed is Whosoever is in the fire and Whosoever is round about it! And Glorified be Allah, the Lord of the Worlds!

But when he approached it, he was called, “O Moses!”

20:11And when he reached it, he was called by name: O Moses!

27:9O Moses! Lo! it is I, Allah, the Mighty, the Wise.

“I am your Lord. Remove your sandals, for you are in the sacred valley of Tuwa.”

20:12Lo! I, even I, am thy Lord, So take off thy shoes, for lo! thou art in the holy valley of Tuwa.

27:9O Moses! Lo! it is I, Allah, the Mighty, the Wise.

28:30And when he reached it, he was called from the right side of the valley in the blessed field, from the tree: O Moses! Lo! I, even I, am Allah, the Lord of the Worlds;

“I have chosen you, so listen carefully to what is revealed.”

20:13And I have chosen thee, so hearken unto that which is inspired.

“I am Allah, there is no deity but Me. So, worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.”

20:14Lo! I, even I, am Allah, There is no Allah save Me. So serve Me and establish worship for My remembrance.

“The Hour is coming, though I keep it hidden, so that every soul may be rewarded for its efforts.”

20:15Lo! the Hour is surely coming. But I will to keep it hidden, that every soul may be rewarded for that which it striveth (to achieve).

“Do not let those who deny it and follow their desires turn you away from it, lest you perish.”

20:16Therefor, let not him turn thee aside from (the thought of) it who believeth not therein but followeth his own desire, lest thou perish.

“What is that in your right hand, O Moses?”

20:17And what is that in thy right hand, O Moses?

He said, “It is my staff, I lean on it, use it to herd my sheep, and have other uses for it.”

20:18He said: This is my staff whereon I lean, and wherewith I bear down branches for my sheep, and wherein I find other uses.

Cast down your staff.” But when he saw it writhing like a serpent, he turned away, not looking back. “O Moses, do not fear, messengers do not fear in My presence.

20:19He said: Cast it down, O Moses!

20:20So he cast it down, and lo! it was a serpent, gliding.

20:21He said: Grasp it and fear not. We shall return it to its former state.

27:10And throw down thy staff! But when he saw it writhing as it were a demon, he turned to flee headlong; (but it was said unto him): O Moses! Fear not! the emissaries fear not in My presence,

28:31Throw down thy staff. And when he saw it writhing as it had been a demon, he turned to flee headlong, (and it was said unto him): O Moses! Draw nigh and fear not. Lo! thou art of those who are secure.

But whoever has done wrong, then replaces evil with good

27:11Save him who hath done wrong and afterward hath changed evil for good. And lo! I am Forgiving, Merciful.

Now place your hand inside your cloak, it will emerge white, without blemish, among nine signs for Pharaoh and his people, for they are a rebellious people.”

20:22And thrust thy hand within thine armpit, it will come forth white without hurt. (That will be) another token.

27:12And put thy hand into the bosom of thy robe, it will come forth white but unhurt. (This will be one) among nine tokens unto Pharaoh and his people Lo! they were ever evil-living folk.

28:32Thrust thy hand into the bosom of thy robe it will come forth white without hurt. And guard thy heart from fear. Then these shall be two proofs from your Lord unto Pharaoh and his chiefs. Lo! they are evil-living folk.

among nine signs for Pharaoh and his people, for they are a rebellious people.”

“Thus, We show you some of Our greatest signs.”

20:23That We may show thee (some) of Our greater portents,

“Go to Pharaoh, for he has transgressed.”

20:24Go thou unto Pharaoh! Lo! he hath transgressed (the bounds).

25:36Then We said: Go together unto the folk who have denied Our revelations. Then We destroyed them, a complete destruction.

26:11The folk of Pharaoh. Will they not ward off (evil)?

27:12And put thy hand into the bosom of thy robe, it will come forth white but unhurt. (This will be one) among nine tokens unto Pharaoh and his people Lo! they were ever evil-living folk.

28:32Thrust thy hand into the bosom of thy robe it will come forth white without hurt. And guard thy heart from fear. Then these shall be two proofs from your Lord unto Pharaoh and his chiefs. Lo! they are evil-living folk.

79:17(Saying:) Go thou unto Pharaoh - Lo! he hath rebelled -

Say to him, ‘Would you purify yourself?

79:18And say (unto him): Hast thou (will) to grow (in grace)?

Shall I guide you to your Lord, so you may stand in awe?’”

79:19Then I will guide thee to thy Lord and thou shalt fear (Him).

He said, “My Lord, I fear they will reject me.

26:12He said: My Lord! Lo! I fear that they will deny me,

28:34My brother Aaron is more eloquent than me in speech. Therefor send him with me as a helper to confirm me. Lo! I fear that they will give the lie to me.

And my heart tightens, and my tongue is not fluent, so send Aaron too.

26:13And I shall be embarrassed, and my tongue will not speak plainly, therefor send for Aaron (to help me).

And they have a charge against me, so I fear they will kill me.”

26:14And they have a crime against me, so I fear that they will kill me.

28:33He said: My Lord! Lo! I killed a man among them and I fear that they will kill me.

Moses said, “My Lord, expand my heart for me.”

20:25(Moses) said: My Lord! relieve my mind

“Ease my task for me.”

20:26And ease my task for me;

“And untie the knot from my tongue.”

20:27And loose a knot from my tongue,

“So, they may understand my speech.”

20:28That they may understand my saying.

“And appoint for me an assistant from my family.”

20:29Appoint for me a henchman from my folk,

And We granted him, out of Our mercy, his brother Aaron as a prophet.

19:53And We bestowed upon him of Our mercy his brother Aaron, a prophet (likewise).

“Aaron, my brother.”

20:30Aaron, my brother.

28:34My brother Aaron is more eloquent than me in speech. Therefor send him with me as a helper to confirm me. Lo! I fear that they will give the lie to me.

“Strengthen me through him.”

20:31Confirm my strength with him

28:34My brother Aaron is more eloquent than me in speech. Therefor send him with me as a helper to confirm me. Lo! I fear that they will give the lie to me.

“And let him share in my mission.”

20:32And let him share my task,

28:34My brother Aaron is more eloquent than me in speech. Therefor send him with me as a helper to confirm me. Lo! I fear that they will give the lie to me.

“So that we may glorify You abundantly.”

20:33That we may glorify Thee much

“And remember You constantly.”

20:34And much remember Thee.

“You are always watching over us.”

20:35Lo! Thou art ever Seeing us.

He said, “No. Go, both of you, with Our signs. We are with you, listening.

26:15He said: Nay, verily. So go ye twain with Our tokens. Lo! We shall be with you, Hearing.

He said, “We will strengthen you with your brother, and We will grant you both authority, so they cannot harm you. With Our signs, you and those who follow you will triumph.”

28:35He said: We will strengthen thine arm with thy brother, and We will give unto you both power so that they cannot reach you for Our portents. Ye twain, and those who follow you, will be the winners.

He said, “Your request has been granted, O Moses.”

20:36He said: Thou art granted thy request, O Moses.

25:35We verily gave Moses the Scripture and placed with him his brother Aaron as henchman.

“And We had already favoured you before.”

20:37And indeed, another time, already We have shown thee favour,

“When We inspired your mother with this command:”

20:38When we inspired in thy mother that which is inspired,

“‘Place him in a chest and cast it into the river. The river will carry him to shore, where an enemy of Mine and his will take him.’ And I cast My love upon you so that you would be raised under My watchful eye.”

20:39Saying: Throw him into the ark, and throw it into the river, then the river shall throw it on to the bank, and there an enemy to Me and an enemy to him shall take him. And I endued thee with love from Me that thou mightest be trained according to My will,

“When your sister walked along and said, ‘Shall I guide you to someone who will care for him?’ So We returned you to your mother, easing her sorrow.” Then you slew a soul, and We rescued you from sorrow, and tested you through many trials. You dwelled for years among the people of Midian, and then arrived at the appointed moment, O Moses.

20:40When thy sister went and said: Shall I show you one who will nurse him? and we restored thee to thy mother that her eyes might be refreshed and might not sorrow. And thou didst kill a man and We delivered thee from great distress, and tried thee with a heavy trial. And thou didst tarry years among the folk of Midian. Then camest thou (hither) by (My) providence, O Moses,

“Then you killed a man, but We saved you from distress and tested you thoroughly. You stayed among the people of Midian for years, then came at the appointed time, O Moses.”

20:41And I have attached thee to Myself.

“And I have chosen you for Myself.”

20:42Go, thou and thy brother, with My tokens, and be not faint in remembrance of Me.

“Go, you and your brother, with My signs, and do not falter in remembering Me.”

20:43Go, both of you, unto Pharaoh. Lo! he hath transgressed (the bounds).

“Speak to Pharaoh gently, so that he may take heed or fear.”

20:44And speak unto him a gentle word, that peradventure he may heed or fear.

They said, “Our Lord, we fear he may act violently or transgress.”

20:45They said: Our Lord! Lo! we fear that he may be beforehand with us or that he may play the tyrant.

He said, “Do not fear. I am with you, hearing and seeing.”

20:46He said: Fear not. Lo! I am with you twain, Hearing and Seeing.

And Allah spoke directly to Moses.

4:164And messengers We have mentioned unto thee before and messengers We have not mentioned unto thee; and Allah spake directly unto Moses;
