Former Prophets
Sent full verses back to top
And to the people of Thamud, We sent their brother Salih. He said, “O my people, worship Allah, you have no Allah but Him. A clear sign has come to you from your Lord: this she-camel of Allah is a sign for you. Let her graze freely on Allah’s land, and do not harm her, or a painful punishment will seize you.”
Warning full verses back to top
I am a faithful messenger to you.
I ask no payment from you; my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds.
Will you be left secure in what you have here
Amid gardens and springs
Fields and palm trees heavy with fruit?
And in Thamūd, they were told, “Enjoy yourselves for a while.”
Rejected full verses back to top
But the arrogant chiefs among his people said to those who believed, “Do you really know that Salih is sent by his Lord?” They replied, “We believe in what he has been sent with.”
They said, “O Salih, we had great hopes for you before this. Do you forbid us from worshipping what our ancestors worshipped? We are in doubt about what you call us to.”
And they said, “Shall we follow a lone human among us? That would be madness.”
“Was the message sent to him alone among us? No, he is an insolent liar.”
Tomorrow they will know who the liar is, the insolent one.
Response full verses back to top
He said, “O my people, consider this: If I stand upon clear proof from my Lord and He has granted me mercy, who will protect me from Allah if I disobey Him? You would only increase my loss.”
He said, “O my people, why do you rush toward evil instead of good? Why do you not seek forgiveness from Allah, so you may receive mercy?”
And tell them that the water is divided between them, and each will take their turn.
Do not obey the commands of the transgressors
Those who spread corruption in the land and never seek to mend their ways.
Rejected full verses back to top
They said, “You are merely one of those bewitched.
They said, “We see bad omens in you and those with you.” He said, “Your fate is with Allah, you are a people being tested.”
In the city were nine men who spread corruption and never sought reform.
They said, “Swear by Allah that we will ambush him and his family by night, then tell his heirs, ‘We did not witness his murder,’ and we will be truthful.”
Signs full verses back to top
Punishment full verses back to top
But they plotted, and We plotted, and they did not perceive.
Then they killed the she-camel and defied their Lord’s command, saying, “Bring upon us what you threaten us with, if you are truthful.”
So, an earthquake/thunderbolt seized/struck them, and they lay lifeless in their homes.
They could not rise, nor were they helped.
Their homes now lie in ruins because of their wrongdoing. Surely in this is a sign for those who understand.
So how severe was My punishment and warning!
And all they had built was of no use to them.
Salih Saved full verses back to top
When Our command came, We saved Salih and those who believed with him by Our mercy, and We spared them from the disgrace of that day.
Salih turned away from them, saying, “O my people, I delivered my Lord’s message and advised you sincerely, but you did not love those who give sincere advice.”
