Supplication

Those in the Fire will cry out to the keepers of Hell, "Pray to your Lord to lighten the torment for us, even for one day!"

40:49And those in the Fire say unto the guards of hell: Entreat your Lord that He relieve us of a day of the torment.

A challenger demanded the punishment bound to fall

70:1A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall

For the disbelievers, none can repel it.

70:2Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel,

The keepers will reply, "Did your messengers not come to you with clear signs?" They will say, "Yes." The keepers will respond, "Then pray yourselves, but the prayers of the disbelievers are in vain."

40:50They say: Came not your messengers unto you with clear proofs? They say: Yea, verily. They say: Then do ye pray, although the prayer of disbelievers is in vain.

They will all stand before Allah, and the weak will say to the arrogant, “We followed you, can you now shield us from Allah’s punishment?” They will reply, “Had Allah guided us, we would have guided you. Now it is all the same, whether we despair or endure.

14:21They all come forth unto their Lord. Then those who were despised say unto those who were scornful: We were unto you a following, can ye then avert from us aught of Allah's doom? They say: Had Allah guided us, we should have guided you. Whether we rage or patiently endure is (now) all one for us; we have no place of refuge.
