The Messengers and the City

Give them the parable of the town, when messengers came to it.

36:13Coin for them a similitude: The people of the city when those sent (from Allah) came unto them;

We sent two, but they rejected them, so We reinforced them with a third. They said, “We are messengers to you.”

36:14When We sent unto them twain, and they denied them both, so We reinforced them with a third, and they said: Lo! we have been sent unto you.

They replied, “You’re just humans like us. The Merciful hasn’t sent anything; you’re only lying.”

36:15They said: Ye are but mortals like unto us. The Beneficent hath naught revealed. Ye do but lie!

The messengers said, “Our Lord knows we’ve truly been sent to you.

36:1Ya Sin.

Our duty is only to deliver the message clearly.”

36:17And our duty is but plain conveyance (of the message).

They said, “We see a bad omen in you. If you don’t stop, we’ll stone you, and a painful punishment will touch you from us.”

36:18(The people of the city) said: We augur ill of you. If ye desist not, we shall surely stone you, and grievous torture will befall you at our hands.

They replied, “Your omen is with yourselves. Is it because you were reminded? No, you are a people who go too far.”

36:19They said: Your evil augury be with you! Is it because ye are reminded (of the truth)? Nay, but ye are froward folk!

Then a man came running from the farthest part of the city. He said, “My people, follow the messengers!

36:20And there came from the uttermost part of the city a man running. He cried: O my people! Follow those who have been sent!

Follow those who ask for no payment and are rightly guided.

36:21Follow those who ask of you no fee, and who are rightly guided.

Why shouldn’t I worship the One who created me, and to whom you’ll all return?

36:22For what cause should I not serve Him Who hath created me, and unto Whom ye will be brought back?

I believe in your Lord, so listen to me!”

36:25Lo! I have believed in your Lord, so hear me!

It was said, “Enter Paradise.” He said, “If only my people knew

36:26It was said (unto him): Enter paradise. He said: Would that my people knew

How my Lord has forgiven me and made me one of the honoured.”

36:27With what (munificence) my Lord hath pardoned me and made me of the honoured ones!

After him, We didn’t send down any army from heaven to his people, nor would We ever do so.

36:28We sent not down against his people after him a host from heaven, nor do We ever send.

It was just one blast, and suddenly, they were extinguished.

36:29It was but one Shout, and lo! they were extinct.

Oh, what a loss for humanity! No messenger ever came to them without being mocked.

36:30Ah, the anguish for the bondmen! Never came there unto them a messenger but they did mock him!

Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them, who never returned?

36:31Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them, which indeed returned not unto them;

Yet all of them will be brought before Us.

36:32But all, without exception, will be brought before Us.

Do not be like the woman who unravels her thread after spinning it tightly, using your oaths deceitfully to gain advantage over others. Allah only tests you through this, and He will clarify for you on the Day of Judgment what you used to dispute.

16:92And be not like unto her who unravelleth the thread, after she hath made it strong, to thin filaments, making your oaths a deceit between you because of a nation being more numerous than (another) nation. Allah only trieth you thereby, and He verily will explain to you on the Day of Resurrection that wherein ye differed.
