Fickle Minded

Yet they play about, lost in doubt.

44:9Nay, but they play in doubt.

So, watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke

44:10But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke

Enveloping the people, “This is a painful torment!”

44:11That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment.

They will cry, “Our Lord, lift the torment from us, we will surely believe!”

44:12(Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers.

How will it be when disaster strikes them for what their hands have done? Then they will come to you, swearing by Allah, saying, ‘We only meant good and reconciliation.’

4:62How would it be if a misfortune smote them because of that which their own hands have sent before (them)? Then would they come unto thee, swearing by Allah that they were seeking naught but harmony and kindness.

Allah knows what is in their hearts, so ignore them, advise them, and speak to them in a way that reaches their souls.

4:63Those are they, the secrets of whose hearts Allah knoweth. So oppose them and admonish them, and address them in plain terms about their souls.

And indeed, among you is one who will hold back, dragging his feet, then if hardship strikes you, he says, 'Ah, how gracious was Allah to me, that I was not there to witness their fate.'"

4:72Lo! among you there is he who loitereth; and if disaster overtook you, he would say: Allah hath been gracious unto me since I was not present with them.

If fortune comes your way, they say, as if no bond ever existed between you, ‘Oh, I wish I had been with them to gain such success!’

4:73And if a bounty from Allah befell you, he would surely cry, as if there had been no love between you and him: Oh, would that I had been with them, then should I have achieved a great success!

Man never tires of asking for good, but when adversity touches him, he despairs and loses hope.

41:49Man tireth not of praying for good, and if ill toucheth him, then he is disheartened, desperate.

When We grant favour to man, he turns away and distances himself, but when hardship touches him, he is full of prayers.

41:51When We show favour unto man, he withdraweth and turneth aside, but when ill toucheth him then he aboundeth in prayer.

Among people are those who say, “We believe in Allah,” but when they are harmed for His sake, they equate people’s persecution with Allah’s punishment. Yet if help comes from your Lord, they say, “We were with you all along.” Does Allah not know what is in the hearts of all people?

29:10Of mankind is he who saith: We believe in Allah, but, if he be made to suffer for the sake of Allah, he mistaketh the persecution of mankind for Allah's punishment; and then, if victory cometh from thy Lord, will say: Lo! we were with you (all the while). Is not Allah Best Aware of what is in the bosoms of (His) creatures?

Allah will surely distinguish the believers and expose the hypocrites.

29:11Verily Allah knoweth those who believe, and verily He knoweth the hypocrites.

When hardship touches a person, he calls upon Us. But when We grant him a favour, he says, "I received this because of my knowledge." No, it is only a test, though most do not realize.

39:49Now when hurt toucheth a man he crieth unto Us, and afterward when We have granted him a boon from Us, he saith: Only by force of knowledge I obtained it. Nay, but it is a test. But most of them know not.

Those before them said the same, yet what they earned did not benefit them.

39:50Those before them said it, yet (all) that they had earned availed them not;

You will see the wrongdoers fearful of what they have earned, and it will inevitably befall them.

42:22Thou seest the wrong-doers fearful of that which they have earned, and it will surely befall them, while those who believe and do good works (will be) in flowering meadows of the Gardens, having what they wish from their Lord. This is the great preferment.

Indeed, the human being was created anxious

70:19Lo! man was created anxious,

When touched by hardship, fretful

70:20Fretful when evil befalleth him

And when touched by good, withholding

70:21And, when good befalleth him, grudging;

The wrongdoers will soon know what fate awaits them.

26:227Save those who believe and do good works, and remember Allah much, and vindicate themselves after they have been wronged. Those who do wrong will come to know by what a (great) reverse they will be overturned!

The consequences of their deeds came upon them, and the wrongdoers among them will face the same. They cannot escape.

39:51But the evils that they earned smote them; and such of these as do wrong, the evils that they earn will smite them; they cannot escape.

Yet if they turn away, We did not send you as a guardian over them. Your duty is only to convey. When We let man taste mercy, he rejoices in it, but when hardship befalls him due to his own actions, he despairs.

42:48But if they are averse, We have not sent thee as a warder over them. Thine is only to convey (the message). And lo! when We cause man to taste of mercy from Us he exulteth therefor. And if some evil striketh them because of that which their own hands have sent before, then lo! man is an ingrate.

When hardship touches people, they call upon their Lord, turning to Him. But when He grants them mercy, some of them associate others with Him

30:33And when harm toucheth men they cry unto their Lord, turning to Him in repentance; then, when they have tasted of His mercy, behold! some of them attribute partners to their Lord

Denying what We have given them. So, enjoy yourselves for a while, you will soon know.

30:34So as to disbelieve in that which We have given them. (Unto such it is said): Enjoy yourselves awhile, but ye will come to know.

When We grant people mercy, they rejoice in it. But when hardship strikes because of what their hands have done, they despair.

30:36And when We cause mankind to taste of mercy they rejoice therein; but if an evil thing befall them as the consequence of their own deeds, lo! they are in despair!

Have they not seen that Allah extends provision to whom He wills and restricts it?

30:37See they not that Allah enlargeth the provision for whom He will, and straiteneth (it for whom He will). Lo! herein indeed are portents for folk who believe.
